Crop circles are made by UFOs

Conspiracy beliefs are less about evidence than about identity and control. This one shows how the feeling of being an insider outweighs the facts. It survives not because it is convincing but because it is so rarely challenged out loud. The modern crop-circle wave began in southern England in the 1970s. In 1991, Doug Bower and Dave Chorley publicly confessed they had made many of the circles since 1978 using planks, rope, and a wire sighting device, and they demonstrated the technique for the press. Since then, teams of 'circle makers' have produced increasingly elaborate geometric formations, sometimes commissioned by advertisers, and have documented their methods on film. The plants are pushed over, not burned or genetically altered; claims of 'anomalous' stem changes have not survived controlled testing. Formations cluster near roads in a few countries — exactly where human artists have access — rather than being distributed as a global 'UFO' phenomenon would predict.
